Some crimes are unthinkable, and yet, they happen every day. Whether you believe there is true evil in the world, or that evil men and women are simply the products of their circumstances and environment, criminals do walk among us, often preying on those least likely to be able to defend themselves. Here are some profiles and information about the most horrific pedophiles and child killers in recent history.

Rodney Alcala

Rodney Alcala is a convicted rapist, torturer and serial killer who evaded justice for 40 years. Known as "The Dating Game Killer" for his appearance as a contestant on the game show, Alcala was twice convicted of the rape, torture, and murder of a young girl but managed to have his convictions overturned. Finally in 2010, with the help of DNA evidence, Alcala was convicted for the last time and sent to death row. After his arrest, a cache of more than 100 photos taken by Alcala of unidentified women and children was found in a storage locker, leading investigators to believe that there may yet be victims not accounted for in the case.

Arthur Gary Bishop

Arthur Gary Bishop (September 29, 1952-June 10, 1988) went from being a honor student, Eagle Scout, and teenage missionary to a pedophile and child killer. He later attributed his obsession to pornography that he was to exposed to while growing up. In 1983, Bishop confessed to murdering five young boys in the course of a routine police investigation. He was convicted of five counts of aggravated kidnapping, five counts of aggravated murder, and one count of sexual abuse of a minor. Bishop did express remorse for his crimes. He was executed by lethal injection at a Utah State Prison in 1988.

Dennis Lynn Rader-The BTK Strangler

The BTK Strangler claimed credit for a series of seven murders in Wichita, Kansas in the early 1970s, then, in 1977, he seemingly disappeared. Rader resurfaced in March 2004, claiming responsibility for an eighth murder he'd committed in 1986. BTK, which stands for "Bind, Torture, Kill," is the name the killer gave himself in the communications he sent to the news media and police. In February of 2005, Rader was charged with 10 counts of first-degree murder. He was convicted and sentenced to 10 consecutive life sentences, or life without the possibility of parole.

John Evander Couey

In February 2005, John Evander Couey (September 19, 1958-September 30, 2009) was convicted of kidnapping, raping, and murdering his Florida neighbor, 9-year-old Jessica Lunsford. Couey's extensive criminal record included 24 arrests for burglary, carrying a concealed weapon without a permit, and indecent exposure.

In 1978, Couey was accused of grabbing a girl in her bedroom, placing his hand over her mouth, and kissing her during a bungled burglary for which he received a sentence of 10 years. He was paroled in 1980. In 1991, he was arrested again, this time for fondling a 5-year-old. Police found the body of Jessica Lunsford buried in a shallow grave under the back porch of a mobile home less than 150 yards from her home on March 18, 2005, one day after convicted sex offender Couey confessed to her murder.

On August 24, 2007, Couey was sentenced to death, plus three consecutive life terms. Thanks to the extensive media coverage the case received Jessica's Law was enacted in Florida, and Congress later created the Jessica Lunsford Act. Couey died of anal cancer on September 30, 2009, before his sentence could be carried out.

Dean Corll and the Houston Mass Murders

At the time of his death, Dean Corll (December 24, 1939-August 8, 1973) was a 33-year-old electrician living in Houston, Texas. Corll (a.k.a. The Candyman or the Pied Piper), along with teen accomplices David Owen Brooks and Elmer Wayne Henley, Jr., was responsible for kidnapping, torturing, raping, and murdering at least 28 young boys in the Houston area in the early 1970s. Ironically, Corll was killed by one of his own accomplices. Henley shot him during a kidnap and torture scenario that spiraled out of control.

Karla Homolka

One of Canada's most infamous female convicts, Karla Homolka, along with her first husband, Paul Bernardo, drugged, tortured, raped, and ultimately murdered three young girls in the early 1990s. Holmolka garnered worldwide media attention when she was offered a deal that allowed her to plead to charges of manslaughter for the brutal slayings of Ontario teenagers Leslie Mahaffy and Kristen French, as well as the rape and murder of her own sister, Tammy. After the deal was struck, videotapes surfaced that showed Homolka had been an active participant in the crimes. She was released from prison in 2005 after serving a short 12-year sentence.

Pedro Alonso Lopez

In a crime spree that ran from 1969 to 2002, and spanned the countries of Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru, Pedro Alonso Lopez was convicted of murdering 110 girls. Lopez, however, claimed the number of victims was closer to 300 and there is speculation that the body count may be as high as 350. In 1998, despite his vows to kill again, Lopez was declared sane and released on a $50 bond from the psychiatric wing of a Bogotá hospital where he had been incarcerated. His current whereabouts are unknown.

Richard Chase-The Vampire of Sacramento

Richard Trenton Chase (May 23, 1950-December 26, 1980) earned the nickname "The Vampire of Sacramento" after brutally murdering six people, including a pregnant woman, a child, and an infant. After shooting his victims with a .22 caliber handgun, Chase sodomized and cannibalized their corpses, drinking their blood and eating some of their organs. Chase suffered from mental delusions. He feared that Nazis were attempting to turn his blood into powder, and believed that drinking human blood would stop the process. On May 8, 1979, he was convicted on six counts of first-degree murder and sentenced to death in a California gas chamber. On December 26, 1980, Chase took an overdose of prescribed antidepressants he'd been hoarding and died before the sentence could be carried out.

Ward Weaver lll

Ward Francis Weaver III is serving a life sentence without the possibility of parole for sexual assault, rape, attempted murder, and the murders of 12-year-old Ashley Pond and 13-year-old Miranda Gaddis in Oregon City, Oregon. The bodies of both girls were discovered on Weaver's property in August 2002. In 2004, he was sentenced to life without parole. Ironically, Weaver's own father, Ward Weaver Jr., was convicted in 1984 of a double-murder.

Nathaniel Bar-Jonah

Nathaniel Bar-Jonah (February 15, 1957-April 13, 2008) was a convicted child predator who was given a 135-year prison sentence for serially molesting, kidnapping, torturing, and attempting to murder children. He was also suspected of murdering a child and cannibalizing the remains.

Wayne Williams-The Atlanta Child Murders

Between 1979 and 1981, 29 children and young black men were killed in a series of homicides that terrorized a community and came to be known as the "Atlanta Child Murders." Wayne Williams was arrested in the case, and in 1982, he was convicted for the murders of Jimmy Ray Payne, 21, and Nathaniel Cater, 27. Investigators closed the books on more than two dozen other cases after his conviction.
