Written on the Heart

That the gospel is countercultural is beyond debate. But texts like this one are so subtly against our way of thinking that we might not even realize the pull to deny this proclamation even as we preach it. Yet, how can we make such a claim about a magnificent vision of the kin-dom of God? It seems something that we all long for on a regular basis, particularly during a time of unrest and division. This is a utopia worth claiming, so why would we be reluctant?

A Litany for the Fifth Sunday in Lent

Leader: When anxiety takes over our communities,
and there doesn’t seem to be much we can do
People: We’ll still serve you, God.

Leader: When we see clouds of fear gathering to pour out sorrow,
and all we can do is brace ourselves for what’s to come
People: We’ll still serve you, God.

Leader: Even if bills – rent, insurance, and loan payments – should pile up,
and we’re not sure what else we can take

We Have Looked at Ourselves in the Mirror

A Multisensory Prayer of Confession for use with Psalm 51:1-12
Note: May also be used on Ash Wednesday

  • Dry erase markers for prayer leader and congregation
  • Dry erasers, paper napkins, tissue, or paper towel to erase mirror
  • Large mirror for the front of the church,
  • (Optional) small mirrors for worshipers

Directions: Place a large mirror in the front for the preacher and/or small, individual mirrors for the congregation. (If you only use a mirror up front, consider having the preacher or prayer leader write various sins, transgressions, etc. on the mirror as the congregation reads the confession. Before the assurance is read, wipe the large mirror clean.

If you use individual mirrors only, allow time for personal reflection during confession and a communal assurance as they wipe their individual mirrors clean. (Mirrors may be handed out as worshipers enter, placed in the pew rack, or distributed at the end of the sermon. Be mindful of glass from the mirrors and children.)

Begin by inviting members of the congregation to draw a visual representation of their prayer of confession on the mirror.

(Silence as the congregation draws on mirrors. If you are using a large front mirror, silence as the leader writes sins from the unison confession and others on the mirror.)

Unison Confession: Angry, hopeless, poor, liars, ashamed, not-good-enough. The list goes on and on, but mostly we are sinners in need of your grace. Forgive us. Give us eyes to see, not dimly but fully as we are ever before you.

Assurance: God, you didn’t have to see us, but you did. And in seeing, we are invited to take a closer look at ourselves. Create anew, revive again, and stay near to us. Amen.

God, We’re in a Broken World

A Lament for the Fifth Sunday of Lent

God of weary years that aren’t quite over,
God of silent tears, now cried aloud,
Thou who has brought us thus far along the way.*

There are children dying at the hands of the law,
Hearts being broken by loved ones,
Economies suffering,
Prisons opening while schools close,
Attacks on healthcare,
Attacks on emotional disparities, and it hurts, Lord.
There doesn’t seem to be enough food to feed the homeless.
Lord, sex-crimes are at an all-time high.
Divorce actually makes more sense than life commitment…

God, we’re in a broken world, and it hurts! But God, we know you know all about brokenness. Only a loving Savior could show us how to prepare for brokenness.

God, we know that you’ve been here. We know that you’ve lived in a world that needed redemption and understand our anxiety, our emotional journey, our trauma, and our victories.

Show us how to hold on to you. Show us how to navigate through the weight of the anticipation of our individual, as well as collective, God-given assignments in a world of brokenness. We need you.

We’re grateful that struggle is a foreign concept to you.

We know what to expect on the other side of “through,” but, Father, keep us in the “going.”

In the Name of the Suffering Savior, we ask these things,

Many: Since we’re being honest, God, we’re not feeling so hot. We’re annoyed, disappointed, and upset. We’re hurting, confused, and stressed.

One: How are you feeling? How are you really feeling?
Many: God, the truth is sometimes it feels like ain’t nobody praying for me.

One: What do you need?
Many: God, the truth is we’re concerned about our people.

One: Who is on your heart and mind?
Many: God, the truth is our people are in pain.

One: What do our communities need?
All: Our God desires truth in the inward parts. And the truth will set us free.

A Call and Response Closing for the Fifth Sunday of Lent

And now, beloved, we have the good news of a Savior who’s not foreign to suffering. He walks with us, he carries us, and he sends his peace! Now let us do the same with one another!

Call: In all that you go through, may you never feel alone

Response: There’s not a friend like the lowly Jesus.

Call: We serve a Savior who’s been there, done that,
and brought a bag of salvation with us in mind

Response: No not one!

Call: Our Savior is greater than Google Maps,
and shows up Waze by making ways out of no ways

Verse 1. - In the twelfth year , etc. March, B.C. 584 , nineteen months attar the destruction of Jerusalem. The two sections of the chapter, Vers. 1-16 and 17-32, belong to the same year, and probably, though the date of the month is net given for the second, were written within a fortnight of each other. The thoughts of the prophet still dwell upon the downfall of Egypt, and he is stirred, as by a special inspiration, to write an elaborate "lamentation" over its departed greatness. It would seem, from the repetition of the word in Ver. 16, as if the elegy had originally been intended to end there. Possibly it may have occurred to the prophet that what he had written was rather a prediction of coming evil than a lamentation, and therefore needed to be completed by a second, coming more strictly under that title.

#5WomenArtists Campaign Tackles Gender Inequity for the Fifth Year in a Row

Can you name five women artists? For plenty of people, the answer is no—a fact the National Museum of Women in the Arts (NMWA) is actively trying to change. Every March since 2016, the Washington, D.C.-based institution has celebrated Women’s History Month by rolling out its #5WomenArtists campaign, which strives to combat gender inequity in the arts through the power of social media. This year’s showing is especially strong, with 272 museums, gallery spaces and other art-focused mainstays joining forces to rally behind the hashtag’s mission, reports Monica Castillo for Hyperallergic.

A stroll through most of the cultural institutions that dot the Western world is all it takes to underscore the severity of the issue. Though women make up nearly half of visual artists in the United States, they represent a meager 13 percent of artists in the permanent collections of prominent American museums. On average, they also earn 26 percent less than their male colleagues—a disparity exacerbated by advanced age, according to the NMWA website. The numbers are even worse for women artists of color, who comprise just 5.6 percent of creatives featured in galleries, per Hyperallergic.

This gross underrepresentation gives the public “a warped or limited view of our history,” Sydney-based arts consultant John Cruthers told the Guardian’s Clarissa Sebag-Montefiore last year. “By having so few women, you miss out on a big part of the story.”

The male-centric skew isn’t simply a product of history. Despite being barred from academic institutions—and even from studying nude models—for centuries, women artists persevered and produced around the world, only to be written out of textbooks and snubbed by collectors. (Of the 300-plus artists mentioned in Janson’s Basic History of Western Art, a staple in many art history classes, only 8 percent are women, and less than 1 percent are women of color.)

Since opening its doors in 1987, the NMWA has acquired some 4,500 works by more than 1,000 artists spanning centuries and continents. In recent years, the museum has expanded its mission to spotlight other inequities and inequalities facing women in the arts. Its current run of #5WomenArtists centers on socially conscious artworks intended to raise global awareness about such issues as climate change, racial justice and LGBTQ+ rights.

Among those featured is Mexico City-based artist Mónica Mayer, whose pieces have reclaimed the clothesline—a traditionally feminine object linked to domesticity—as a powerful tool to spark discussion about sexual harassment, domestic violence and human trafficking. In 2017, she debuted a temporary NMWA installation called El Tendedero/The Clothesline Project the display prompted visitors to voice their dislikes about their hometowns on small pink ballots that were then pinned to clotheslines.

Also highlighted on the NMWA website is Jaune Quick-to-See Smith, an enrolled member of the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes of the Flathead Indian Nation in Montana. She is known for infusing her work with Native American art forms and illustrating the longstanding suppression of native cultures.

With nearly 300 other institutions—including the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery, the Guggenheim Museum, Museu de Arte Sacra de São Paulo and the Toronto International Film Festival—contributing to this year’s #5WomenArtists campaign, other examples abound online. On Twitter, the hashtag has been attached to figures including Augusta Savage, the only black woman artist to contribute to the 1939 New York World’s Fair, and Shi Hui, who has garnered acclaim for her eclectic, fiber-based sculptures.

The goal, perhaps, is to craft a reality in which the hashtag may no longer be necessary. Until then, initiatives like #5WomenArtists will hopefully inspire people to “turn [their] gaze inward,” California dealer Ashara Ekundayo told the Art Newspaper’s Rochelle Spencer last year. After all, she says, “the work that women create, and the institutions we build and steward, are containers for celebration and ceremony.”

* What is Galactic Alignment?

The Galactic Alignment is the alignment of the December solstice sun with the Galactic equator. This alignment occurs as a result of the precession of the equinoxes.
Precession is caused by the earth wobbling very slowly on its axis and shifts the position of the equinoxes and solstices one degree every 71.5 years. Because the sun is one-half of a degree wide, it will take the December solstice sun 36 years to precess through the Galactic equator (see diagram below). The precise alignment of the solstice point (the precise center-point of the body of the sun as viewed from earth) with the Galactic equator was calculated to occur in 1998 (Jean Meeus, Mathematical Astronomy Morsels, 1997). Thus, the Galactic Alignment “zone” is 1998 +/- 18 years = 1980 – 2016. The Fifth Month

Introduction: Ab is the Jewish name for the fifth month in the religious calendar and the eleventh month of the civil calendar. This non-biblical name began to be used during the Babylonian captivity. The Bible simply calls this month the 𠇏ifth month.” This designation is found ten times in the Bible. The month of Ab begins with the new moon of August and always has thirty days. Agriculturally, the month of Ab is known in Israel as the time for the ripening of grapes, figs, and olives.

In this message, the fifth month is symbolic of those times of your life you think of as evil: the bad year, the dreaded month or time of year, or, as the Bible states, “the evil day” ( Amos 6:3 Ye that put far away the evil day, and cause the seat of violence to come near
See All. ). The young are warned to serve God now “while the evil days come not” ( Ecclesiastes 12:1 Remember now thy Creator in the days of thy youth, while the evil days come not, nor the years draw nigh, when thou shalt say, I have no pleasure in them
See All. ). The believer is to redeem the time �use the days are evil” ( Ephesians 5:16 Redeeming the time, because the days are evil.
See All. ). Perhaps you are in an evil time of life or dread a particular time of year because of past experiences. Perhaps you need to learn the lesson of the fifth month.

    Conclusion: Mother Hen Teaches Us to Wait on God – A. W. Tozer told this story from his youth: “I’ve often wondered how a hen must feel about sitting for three weeks on an egg. My mother always put thirteen eggs under a hen and the old girl would sit right there. She might take a little coffee break once in awhile, but back she𠆝 come again to the nest. For the first week, it was a novelty. Two weeks of it she might endure, but that last week must have been torture—just sitting there with nothing happening.

    “Then about noon of the twenty-first day, the first little experimental peep is heard under her wings. And she smiles as only a hen can smile and says, ‘Thank God, they’re here.’ After that it is just a question of time. One after the other, the chicks peck themselves out of their shells. I used to get down on my hands and knees as a boy and watch them pecking themselves out. They’re messy when they first appear, but give them about ten minutes in the sunshine and they’re as fluffy as can be, and lovely to look at. But they only come after twenty-one long days of waiting.

    Return of The Muffin: Eli Brooks’ Fifth Year Huge For Michigan Basketball

    Michigan head coach Juwan Howard made it known more than once how much he loved his senior class, saying repeatedly each had an open invitation to return after the NCAA granted athletes an extra year due to COVID.

    It was a foregone conclusion Isaiah Livers would leave, having come very close to bolting after his junior season. He’s on track to graduate in May and just starting a six-month recovery from foot surgery.

    Point guard Mike Smith is giving the NBA a shot — if he doesn’t make it, he’ll have several options in the private sector — and wing Chaundee Brown thought about it, but he’s ready to pursue his professional path.

    Fifth-year senior Austin Davis, meanwhile, is looking at a pro career overseas.

    Of all the candidates to return, he might have been the most important. He made Howard a happy man when he told him April 14 he’d be back. He did it in the usual Brooks way — no fanfare, just a tweet from the program that the captain would return.

    His dad and former coach, James Brooks, told us a few months ago what we were all thinking … that such a move could be huge for the program, though he had no idea what his son would do.

    “I think it would be great for Michigan if Eli came back because he’s the right personality for the younger guys to see what the work ethic is (that’s needed) and how you make yourself good,” he said. “Learning the plays … he’s a teacher and he understands stuff.

    “From that aspect, I think it would be good.”

    So did Howard, which is why he deemed him “The Professor.”

    But the lucky few hundred in attendance when Michigan pounded Michigan State to clinch the Big Ten title found out his dad had bestowed another nickname upon him long before.

    While the confetti fell and the family members in attendance watched the seniors receive their framed jerseys, a tribute played on the massive Crisler scoreboard. That’s when James Brooks revealed the secret after telling his son how proud he and his wife, Kelly, were, and how much they loved him.

    “One last thing,” he said. “You know him as number 55, but we know him as ‘The Muffin.’”

    That left everyone to wonder … was it something to do with the hair? Was he privy to the pastry when he was a kid?

    It turned out he got the nickname years earlier because he would rise up under pressure, like a muffin in the oven. In that respect the nickname fit perfectly. He’s hit big shot after big shot the last few years, the guy to take it upon himself to end another team’s run or apply a dagger down the stretch.

    He was the reason the Wolverines were in the round of 32 game with LSU early when the Tigers looked ready to run U-M out of the gym, making several triples. Nobody was certain Brooks would ever reach that level during his first two seasons in Ann Arbor. Though he’d had his moments, he’d had some struggles that affected his confidence.

    Brooks wasn’t sure what to think when Howard replaced head coach John Beilein, either. But Howard’s approach was just what he needed, and he continued to blossom as he had under Beilein.

    “When coach Howard came, I think what really happened was he really got to know who Eli was and saw that with his ups and downs, there was the flash that this could be something good,” James Brooks said. “He really empowered Eli to really think that he was good. You can say somebody is good, but your actions speak so much more than what your words do.

    “With coach Howard, there were times I was like as both a dad and his ex-coach thinking, ‘my goodness — stop him from doing that!' [Howard] would let him go and he would get himself out of it. He’d say, ‘wow, coach Howard really believes in me and lets me have some freedom. I feel empowered on the court … they believe in me. I’m going to take this and I’m going to be strong with it.’”

    But James Brooks still wasn’t sure if his son would opt for a fifth year. It hadn’t been a typical four years of energy, he noted — a lot of on and off the court happenings that took a lot out of him — and when his brother asked months ago if he’d consider a return, he wasn’t even ready to think about it.

    “He said, ‘let me get through the season,’” James Brooks recalled. “If I still get joy about being in Ann Arbor and I’m doing well, maybe I’ll consider it.’”

    He was and he did, and now he’s back for another season to lead what should be another talented, albeit different-looking, Juwan Howard team.

    The muffin is set to rise again, and his teammates, Howard and Michigan fans couldn’t be happier.

    No Joke - Homily for the Fifth Sunday of Lent, The Third Scrutiny

    Just the other day, it dawned on me that Easter Sunday falls on April Fools' Day this year. Now with the way my mind works, I started thinking about what the first Easter would have been like if it had fallen on April 1 st . Imagine Mary Magdalene telling Peter and John that the tomb is empty they run to the tomb to see for themselves, and the guards say: “April Fools!” Imagine how different our Easter traditions would be, hunting for Easter eggs for hours, only to learn that none were hidden in the first place. “April Fools!” The possibilities are endless. Well, fortunately for us, the resurrection is no joke, and that’s the message of today’s readings.
